FACT
Created in 1812 in the northwest
corner of the state of Tennessee
by an earthquake that allowed
the mighty Mississippi River to
leave her banks, Reelfoot Lake
stands as the only natural lake
in Tennessee.
LEGEND
The Chickasaws had a mighty
chiefain by the name of Reelfoot.
He got his name because he only
had one real foot. The other was
made of wood from one of the
many cypress trees which dotted
the land. It was held in place by
straps that were made from a deer
which had been slain. When he
walked, he limped. Each time his
wooden foot struck the ground,
it made a sound like thunder
from heaven.
