Tennesseans in the Civil War
Written by Dr. Lytle Givens Ph. D.

Numerous memoirs and diaries of high-ranking officers and civilians on both sides of the American Civil War have been in the public domain for many years. On the other hand, personal experiences of ordinary individuals during this time are more difficult to find.

The book contains letters, diaries, and memoirs reflecting the hopes, dreams, despair, and longings of Tennessee men and women during the war. It gives a somber (sometimes humorous) account of everyday life at home and life as a soldier. The impact of the war on the lives of ordinary persons cannot be overstated.

Dr. Givens is Professor Emeritus at Union University, Jackson, Tn,received his first two degrees from MTSU and the Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Georgia.
